History


Mahindra started in 1945 in Ludhiana, Punjab in India at that time the name of the company was Mahindra and Mohammed. It was established by the brothers J. C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra and Malik Gulam Mohammed.following the partition of India in 1947, Malik Gulam left the company and migrated Pakistan where he became the finance minister of Pakistan and later the third governor general in the year 1951 following his departure, k. C. Mahindra changes his company name from Mahindra and Mohammed to Mahindra and Mahindra.
It eventually saw a business opportunity in expanding into manufacturing and selling larger MUV’s starting with the assembly under the license of Jeep in India. Soon established as the main manufacturers of India this company later come into manufacturing light commercial vehicles and agricultural tractors.

Mahindra began manufacturing the tractors for the Indian market during the early 60s. It is the top tractor company in the world by sells since its inception this company had sold over 2.1 million tractors. Mahindra tractors are available in forty countries including India, united states, China, Australia, Nuziland the name of few.
In 1996 the company plant to enter the SUV segment with the new product with which it could compete globally. Since Mahindra and Mahindra did not have the technical knowledge, how to handle such an ambitious project. They divides an entirely new concept among Indian auto companies, grouping in new executives how had worked in the auto industry in western countries such as Pawan Goenka and alan Duran. This company broke the rule that says automakers must design engineer and test their own vehicles while spending millions of dollars in the process.
The new Mahindra Scorpio SUV had all of its major system design directly by suppliers with the only inputs from Mahindra being design performance specifications and program cost. The design and engineering of the systems for the Scorpio were carried out by the suppliers themselves. Sourcing and engineering locations were also chosen by suppliers.

The parts were later assembled in the Mahindra plant under the Mahindra batch using this method the company was able to build from scratch a new vehicle with virtually 100% supplier involvement from concept to reality and cost of rupees 600 crores including improvements to the plant. This project took Five years to move from concept to final product.
When it launched on 28th June 2002 the car was a huge success til this year Mahindra has sold over five lakh models of Mahindra Scorpio in India alone. Scorpio was the first SUV from the company build for the global market and has been successfully accepted in the international markets across the globe.

Mahindra two wheelers was founded in 2008 when Mahindra and Mahindra limited acquired the Kinetic motor company limited. Mahindra launched its relatively, heavily publicized SUV XUV 500 in September 2011. The new SUV by Mahindra was designed in house, Mahindra XUV 500 midsized sports utility vehicle. The XUV 500 was designed and developed at Mahindra's design and vehicle build center in Nashik and Chennai and manufactured in Mahindra's Chakan and Nashik plant. The design is inspired by the fastest land animal, the cheetah. It is the first monocoque chassis based vehicle Mahindra has ever produced.

Riva electric vehicles formally known the Riva electric company was founded in 1994 by Chetan Maini as a joined venture between the Maini Group of Bangalore and American electric vehicle technologies of the US. the company soon aim to develop and produce an affordable compact electric car. In 2001 RECC launched the Riva electric car the company’s flagship vehicle available in 26 countries with more than 4000 of its different versions sold worldwide by mid-March 2011. Riva was acquired by Indian conglomerate Mahindra and Mahindra in may 2010. In 2013 Mahindra Riva was selected as one of the worlds fifty most innovative companies in 2013 by fast company. Indian market saw the launch of Mahindra E2O in March 2013 apart from the E2O Mahindra Riva is also working on an oil electric sports car concept called Hallo.

Mahindra since to follow a superstition when it comes to naming its vehicles. The commercial vehicles made by the company follow the invisible rule of ending with NO  like in Scorpio, Verito and XUV 500. it is believed that the company does this due to the success of its first vehicles Scorpio and Bulero.
